Katrina A. Mears M.D., F.A.C.S.
BOARD CERTIFIED OPHTHALMOLOGIST AND RETINA-VITREOUS SPECIALIST
Retina Specialists are different. A retina specialist is a medical doctor who has specialized in ophthalmology and sub-specialized in diseases and surgery of the retina and vitreous of the eye. Retina specialists work in clinics and hospitals and treat a wide variety of eye conditions and diseases. Retina specialists are highly trained. They must first complete medical school and specialized training as an ophthalmologist. They also have to complete additional fellowship training in the treatment of the retina and vitreous. All of the physicians of Retina Consultants of Southwest Florida have also completed extensive training in retina and vitreous surgeries.
Dr. Mears completed her retina and vitreous medical and surgical training at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Iowa City, Iowa. She joined Dr. Walker, Dr. Raskauskas, Dr. Ghuman, and Dr. Sharma at Retina Consultants of Southwest Florida in 2016. She has been an investigator in several pivotal clinical trials that have led to FDA approval of new therapies to fight retina or vitreous diseases.
She has contributed her time and expertise to further medical and ophthalmic education by serving as a lecturer to her peers on subjects such as retinal surgery techniques, retinal diagnostics, hereditary retinal diseases, and many other retinal disorders. She also collaborated and authored publications of textbooks and peer-reviewed journals.
In 2012, she was awarded the David Barsky Kresge Eye Institute Best Research Project prize and the Obertynski Kresge Eye Institute Best Published Ophthalmology Research prize. She has authored numerous abstracts that have been presented at regional, national, and international conventions and has been published in respected medical journals such as Ophthalmology, JAMA Ophthalmology, and Expert Review of Ophthalmology.
Dr. Mears is currently a member of the multiple organizations including the American Society of Retina Specialists, the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the International Society of Ocular Oncologists and the Royal College of Ophthalmologists in London, United Kingdom.
